Filmtest

The positive films tested are all fuji films. It is not because i think Fuji makes better film than kodak but i wanted to concentrate on one brand. For comparision i also tested one Kodak Negative film. I tested;

Fuji velvia 50 asa (problem with scanning)

Fuji Velvia 100F

Fuji Astia 100 F

Fuji Provia 100F

kodak 160VC

The purpose of the test was.

is the a big difference between the commercial available films

Is there a big color difference

Is there a big sharpness difference

The difference between modern positve and negative films

Difference between Velvia 50 and 100 asa

How it was done.

- Equipment.

For the test i used a Mamiya 7 with 65 mm lens. The Mamiya is widely regarded as a camera with very sharp lenses. Some lenses are tested by photodo. http://www.photodo.com/nav/prodindex.html

The 65mm scores 3.8 which is very good (the 150mm is even better). Another advantage of theMamiya 7 is the flatness of the film. Bacause it is not a reflex camera the film is minimal curved. Besides that there is no mirror-shock.

so if one camera can do the tests it is the Mamiya. Scans of the films are made with a Imacon scanner at a resolution of 3000dpi. I know that some will say that 4000 dpi is much better. I know but the difference is small. Of course all the tests are done on a tripod. But 3000dpi results in 6500x8200 pixels. That should be enough for a 27 x 21 inch ( 70 x 55 cm) photo. at 300 dpi print resolution. At 200 Dpi it is even bigger; 41 x 32 inch (100 x 80 cm)!

It is a linear enlargement of 100/7 cm = 14 times. It is just possible with a good sharp original.

Of course this test is not done scientific percfect. i know. I decided to use very good equipment but it is not the best. Yes i could do a 4000dpi scan or even better a Drum scan. But in real life a lot of photographers will use the Imacon. and maybe that scanner is even better than most of the photograpers have. The result will still give a good comparision.

The compleet image. The real scan is 8200x6500 pixels. It is very sharp. Click on it to see a detail
Here we compare the sharpness of the rope.
